1955 Buick Special
1955 Buick Special
It’s always been a problem for me to concentrate. My mind
wanders from minute to minute, second to second. Hard thing to
overcome. I’m a designer by profession. I have to keep my mind on
what I’m doing when I’m working with a prospective client---
focus---focus----focus---
I remember to this day, over 27 years ago, sitting in a customer’s
kitchen, trying to come up with a design. They would ask me a
question. I’d answer while looking across the street in the garage
of an old man who was mowing his lawn.
FOCUS---FOCUS---FOCUS---
I focused. I excused myself so I could go outside and look at their
roof for some fabricated reason. Out of their sight, I strained to
see what was sticking out from an enormous pile of blankets and
newspapers. A very large bumper and grill.
Back inside, I wrapped things up with my clients and promised to
get back to them soon. Then I had to leave for my next appointment,
a very important appointment that I couldn’t miss. Unfortunately,
the person I had it with didn’t know it. I walked across the street
and set it up. I set up an appointment to look at the old car. “Got
a few minutes?”
The man was a retired railroad worker. We cleaned off the junk and
revealed a four door jewel. He bought it new and drove it to and
from work in the 50’s, retiring it into the garage in the 60’s.
Less than 50,000 miles. Not a scratch, perfect interior, YES, THEY
ARE STILL OUT THERE, JUST STOP AND ASK!
I bought it, got it home, and had the mobile mechanic change the
fluids, do a brake job, and that was it. I drove it for years.
Long gone now, it’s another wonderful memory gone by. The dashboard
on this thing looked like an antique Wurlitzer Juke box (for those
of you who remember those things.) And at night when you turned on
the headlights, it lit up just the same. I can close my eyes and
see it now. Love my memory, glad to share it.
Enjoy.
